iTunes @ Stanford

Stanford just released a custom section of the iTunes Music Store with Stanford audio and video, including lectures, speeches and musical performances. Very cool. What’s even cooler is that you don’t have to be a Stanford student to get it all - it’s open to everyone. I think I’ll start with Steve Jobs’ speech to the 2005 graduating class, and then move on to Lawrence Lessig.

Purdue’s BoilerCast is a nice service, and will be even better when more professors jump on board and start recording the super-popular classes (PSY 120? OLS 252? ENGR 106? ENTM 104? ENGL 103/104/106?) The advantage of Stanford’s service is that, while it is limited to iTunes users, it does offere a greater array of content — music, speeches, sports highlights and other content beyond the classroom. Having it open to everyone (like BoilerCast) is another great feature.

Here’s some things I think could be added to BoilerCast in addition to lectures:

  • Groundbreaking ceremonies (video; there’s 2-3 a week, it seems like)
  • Sports highlights (audio/video)
  • Daily newscast (audio, maybe video)
  • ITaP and ECN short courses (how-to’s for Matlab, Office, SAS, etc.)
  • Course profiles (”Why you should take OLS 579″)
  • Events news (”there’s a job fair at X on Y, a concert at A on B day at C time…”)
